Overview:
The August Moon and Chinese Festivals are Boston’s Chinese community's way to
celebrate their heritage. Both are fun-filled days of food, music, dance, and
culture.
|
|
Centered around the Chinatown Gateway
Arch on Harrison Avenue, these two one-day events allow families a
glimpse of Asian tradition and hospitality.
Burmese, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese food, music, and art are displayed here.
Martial arts demonstrations, plentiful
food choices, and elegant dancers make this an enjoyable way to
spend an afternoon. |
The August Moon Festival, held to correspond with the full moon, will be held on August 21 this year. The festival is based on a traditional Chinese celebration of the 14th century Chinese victory over the Mongol Empire.
The victory was said to be possible, in part, because of secret messages hidden in the traditional moon cakes pastries. These disc-shaped savories filled with sweetened bean paste are featured during the festival as are a wide range of food vendors, music, and dance.
Evening neighborhood moon-watching parties are traditionally held during the celebration and the neighborhood children carry brightly colored lanterns.
