The
Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum
commemorates the night of December 16, 1773, when a group of Boston Patriots
stormed out of the Old South Meeting House and headed for the harbor, ready to
take desperate measures in protest of the British tax on tea and other goods
shipped to the Colonies.
The result was the famous Boston Tea
Party, which culminated with the tossing of 342 crates of tea
into the sea. This was a major event in U.S. history and a step
on the road to the Revolution.
For years, visitors have been recreating the scene here in
Boston, climbing aboard a replica ship and tossing crates of tea
(attached to the ship by ropes) overboard and into the harbor.
The new Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum
will include two more replica ships and museum space that’s
twice the size of the current facility.
The Boston Tea Room will serve
food to the general public during the day and be available for
parties in the evenings. The gift shop will also be greatly
expanded.
