The
Harbor Islands of Boston, a National Park area, total 34 in all and
boast 1600 acres at high tide and 3100 acres at low tide. Thirteen
of the islands are open to visitors.
Getting to these islands, which are home to lots
of interesting wildlife refuges, lighthouses, and Coast Guard
stations, is half the fun.
Families may travel to the Harbor Islands via passenger
ferries, which depart from Boston's Long Wharf and visits five
of the islands.
Park Boat Tours, departing from three different locations in
Boston, visit Little Brewster Island for a fun Boston Light
Tour. Private watercraft may also dock at George's Island.
Family
Fun days are offered throughout the summer and include interactive
arts and crafts, story times, and other activities. Ranger programs
are also fun for the kids and the Boston Children's Theater often
performs in the islands as well.
