Boston Common is the oldest public park in the nation, having been
established in 1634 as a common pasture for the farmers in the area.
Through the years, it was also used for military purposes and for
more macabre reasons, such as public hangings, which took place
there until 1817.
After 1830, cows were no longer
permitted on the grounds and since that time, this area has been
designated as parkland for the enjoyment and recreation of the
citizens of Boston.
The Boston Common is located at the south end of the Freedom
Trail and is a fun place for all to explore. You’ll find a ton
of statuary situated throughout the park and the Frog Pond offers
public ice skating in the winter months.
There’s a bandstand
used for concerts and theatrical productions, and large
special events are often held here, especially in the warm months.
If you’re in Boston at Christmas time, check out the huge lighted
tree in the Common.
